Official Public Maths Clues

SECTT's An Introduction to Mathematics PDF is the strongest public practice source. It is a basic-skills revision pack, says no calculator should be used for the pre-employment assessment, and includes multiple-choice questions in the same broad style this app should practise.

The mock question pool should therefore include:

  • Whole-number addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Decimals and money calculations
  • Fractions, percentages, ratios, and unit conversions
  • Formula substitution and simple rearranging
  • Electrical maths such as Ohm's Law, power, series resistance, and simple

reciprocal work for parallel resistance

Useful example-style prompts from the public SECTT maths pack include:

  • Converting a mark such as 27 out of 45 into a percentage
  • Finding what percentage 20p is of £5
  • Finding the percentage reduction from £12,500 to £9,000
  • Using I = V / R with values such as V = 240 and R = 12
  • Adding series resistances such as 0.45 + 0.05 + 0.8
  • Using P = I^2R when P = 400 and I = 10
  • Arithmetic such as 432 + 986 + 218, 6468 / 7, 12.5% of £80,

64% as a fraction, and 5/8 as a percentage
